Gung Ho is a 1986 movie directed by Ron Howard that depicts an American automobile plant foreman, Hunt Stevenson (played by Michael Keaton), attempting to work together with his Japanese counterpart, Takahara Kazuhiro (Gedde Watanbe), to reopen the plant and make it successful.  Faced with cultural differences and a work force with questionable attitudes toward work ethic and quality control, Stevenson and Kazuhiro find the mission a challenging one.  After viewing the film, students writing film reviews of Gung Ho may wish to study reviews of other movies, such as Joel Bakan’s The Corporation, to get a feel for the standard form of film reviews.,Normally, film reviews include a synopsis of the film’s plot and they may discuss the people behind the film, such as actors, producers and directors.  Themes within the movie may also be discussed, and the student should give his opinion as to the quality of the film and as to how well the producers’ goals were accomplished by the film.  Film reviews of Gung Ho, like any good film review, should cover all of these things, but Gung Ho offers fodder for another level of study.,Many business students have used film reviews of Gung Ho as a basis for exploring leadership styles.  The Japanese liaison, Kazuhiro, has been disgraced in his own country as being an ill-fit manager because he is considered to be too lenient on employees.   His tenure in the American plant is a final chance for him to prove his merit.  Meanwhile, Stevenson’s enthusiasm and expertise combine to make him a worthy personality for analysis.  A study of reliable sources on Gung Ho and examples of other papers on Gung Ho should enable students to synthesize information gleaned into a strong film review of Gung Ho.
