The PMHNP course has effectively realized several objectives that provide me with the right knowledge and skills I need in my clinical practice to serve the community with mental health issues. First, it has helped me understand the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) for mental disorders diagnostic to assess, diagnose and provide treatment for mental health patients.
According to Bredström (2017), DSM-5 is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health providers in the United States. As a result, I can provide treatment of different chronic and acute mental health disorders to promote the patient’s quality of life. Through this tool, I can understand the symptoms and description of these conditions to provide treatment for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, adolescents, and females.
Second, I learned to develop notes including the patient’s history and subjective and objective data to assess for differential diagnosis to provide the accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Often, patients may present similar symptoms, making it difficult to establish the condition the patient is suffering. Therefore, I learned that it is best to include differential diagnosis to ensure I provide the right treatment. Sixth, the course provided insights into the professional values and the ethical and legal standards that PMHNPs should adhere to during practice.
