Recent Experience in My Practicum

Working in an urgent care facility, I have recently encountered a 25-year-old female patient with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). According to Barbee et al. (2021), STDs are mainly caused by bacteria and can be easily treated. However, viral infections might not permanently be cured but can be managed. While STDs can range from several conditions, I was unsure of the specific condition the patient was suffering.

Describe the Thoughts and Feelings

I thought it would be best to probe further the symptoms, which could help make the correct diagnosis. She had visited the facility for screening following a discussion with her friends about the risks associated with STDs. However, she was asymptomatic and asked to be tested for all STDs. I felt proud of her for taking the bold step to know her health.

Situation Evaluation

The lack of symptoms made it difficult to establish the specific condition. I asked about her sexual partners, and she said she has only had two partners in her life but had recently had unprotected sex with her new partner, whom she had known a few months ago. The patient denied having anal or oral sex. She also indicated that she had taken an HIV test around two months ago and tested negative. Nonetheless, one of the highest possibilities is that the patient had gonorrhea, which often does not have symptoms.

Analysis

While no symptoms could help diagnose the condition, the patient underwent a laboratory testing test for HIV, Syphilis, genital gonorrhea, and chlamydia. However, the tests came out negative except for the urine test for gonorrhea.

Conclusion and Learning

The patient had genital gonorrhea, although she did not present any symptoms. I learned that although there are no symptoms, the condition can cause serious health problems to the victim if left untreated. Nonetheless, these symptoms can be mild and mistaken for a vaginal or bladder infection (Goggins et al., 2021).

Action Plan

The main objective of the treatment was to prevent further infection, which may have adverse effects on the patient’s health. Therefore, I prescribed ceftriaxone, which is given as an injection, and Zithromax, an oral medication. Combining these two drugs increases their efficiency in treating the condition due to the emerging strains of drug-resistant gonorrhea (Unemo et al., 2019).
