This reflection journal also allows students to outline what they have discovered about their professional practice, personal strengths and weaknesses, and additional resources that could be introduced in a given situation to influence optimal outcomes. Each week students should also explain how they met a course competency or course objective(s). This week\’s focus was on PRACTICES OF CULTURALLY SENSITIVE CARE AND ENSURING THE INTEGRITY OF HUMAN DIGNITY IN CARE OF ALL PATIENTS.

Human dignity is one of the most essential professional and ethical issues in nursing practice (Khaghanizade et al., 2016). Despite its complexity and multidimensional nature, it is vital for all health providers to fully integrate it into their service delivery to improve patient care. Human dignity is defined as respecting individuality and treating each individual as a unique being with equal importance.
In this week’s readings, I have learned that human dignity is a moral obligation among nurses at the workplace. By exercising this value, the patients feel loved, respected, and valued despite their condition. As a result, the patients develop high levels of trust in the health providers, self-confidence, and a sense of identity, which improves their health condition.
Nonetheless, human dignity is closely tied with culturally sensitive care. In this regard, it is through human dignity that nursing practitioners get to understand, respect, and provide culturally sensitive care. The first step to providing culturally sensitive care in nursing practice is learning the patient’s culture and incorporating it into the treatment plan. This practice builds cooperation between the patient and the practitioner, improving their quality of health.

Moreover, nurses can ensure culturally sensitive care on patients by overcoming their language barriers, being aware of social issues surrounding the patient, educating the patients on the treatment procedures, and actively listening to the issues raised by the patients (Nyholm & Koskinen, 2015).
Additionally, there is a need to enhance the integrity of human dignity in delivering patient care. Integrity can be defined as the ability of an individual to possess high morals. In nursing, the integrity of human dignity encompasses the issues of privacy, autonomy, and respect. In this regard, patients receiving healthcare are vulnerable and trust the nurses with their intimate details.

They also rely on these providers to help them with basic activities like dressing, eating, and providing safety. Therefore, I have learned that while patients are subjected to all forms of vulnerability while receiving healthcare, there is a need to enhance integrity in human dignity while incorporating culturally sensitive care.
