Reaction Paper: The Two Different Worlds of Black and White Fraternity Men – Visibility and Accountability as Mechanisms of Privilege Summary and Reflection

Solution

The Two Different Worlds of Black and White Fraternity Men

The article talks about society’s discriminative nature against people perceived as being of the inferior race. Notably, it focuses on social inequality that arises from the race. A person is stated to be privileged, depending on his or her race. For instance, whites are depicted as free to go different without receiving strange glances.

On the other hand, blacks are looked at differently when they are in different places, especially areas where they are the minority. Similar acts of privilege are seen in the workplaces and investment opportunities where whites are likely to receive more pay and find easy funding for businesses (Ray, Rashawn, and Rosow 4).

Likewise, the article has discussed issues of visibility where whites are more likely to be treated well. Blacks, on the other hand, are judged by different stereotypes. The article provides an illustration of the judgment of blacks who attend racial schools undergo. They are treated as belonging to gangs, and whose place at the institutions only became possible due to affirmative actions.

Likewise, blacks are depicted as likely to be monitored when moving around the academic institutions than whites. Ray, Rashawn, and Rosow conduct nine-month ethnographic research to determine the validity of the claims. The research’s setting is in a predominantly white institution.

Data collection was done through observations, interviews, and the use of focus groups. The findings illustrated that blacks’ movements within the institutions were restricted compared to whites. Also, white students were depicted as likely to move within the organization without their visibility being identified. However, that was not the case for blacks who were even recognized by their names. Whites were perceived as social with anybody they wanted to associate with while blacks mostly interacted.

The article’s arguments offer a perfect illustration of the different issues we learn in class. The point of racial privilege emerges. The fact that whites can move anywhere within the school without feeling some sense of attention illustrates their skins’ superior nature that people have no concerns in focusing on. On the other hand, blacks attract a lot of attention as people tend to judge them based on their race.

Another idea that I can relate to from the article and class readings is negative stereotypes. The stereotypes in this particular case are anchored on racial identity. While whites are linked to positive things or events, blacks are depicted in a manner that connects to the ill events such as gang violence.

I perceive the negative stereotype with which blacks are being subjected to as a reason for the police’s rough handling. The article points out that blacks are likely to be considered members of violent gangs. The effect of such thoughts is reflected by the recent killing of a black man, George Floyd, at the police’s hands. Floyd died as a result of the rough treatment he received at the hands of white policemen. The event signified the destructive nature of social stereotypes that might be anchored on a racial basis.

I find the article as having attained its objective of communicating its information on the existence of diverse forms of social privileges. Likewise, the paper has illustrated that people are indeed judged from their visible appearance, with race being a significant factor. The article has managed to answer its earliest claims by concluding with practical research to prove its viability.

My crucial issue of concern in the article pertains to its arrangement. I am used to researching articles, first introducing the discussion topic then proceeding to other chapters in an organized manner. However, the article initially began by reviewing the literature then proceeding to introduce the project later hence creating confusion.
