Recent Experience in My Practicum

In my recent practicum, I encountered a 25-year-old female patient with Chlamydia. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that can cause long-term health problems to a patient if not treated in its early stages.

Describe the Experience, Thoughts, and Feelings

It was my first time offering patient care to someone with the condition. I can describe the feeling as anxious and confused. My first thought was that she was suffering from STIs, but I was unsure of the specific one. She presented common symptoms such as vaginal discharge, pain during sexual intercourse, burning sensation during urination, and cervix inflammation.

Situation Evaluation

I conducted a diagnosis to establish the specific ailment she was suffering from. I probed further on other symptoms that could help to ensure I performed the correct diagnosis. She also reported that she has been bleeding between her periods, has nausea, pain in the lower abdomen, rectal pain, and had a sore throat. These symptoms indicated that the patient had Chlamydia, and it was in an advanced stage for it had affected her rectal system (Honkila et al., 2018). While she may have gotten the infection through sexual intercourse, she presented throat infection symptoms, which shows that she was also infected through oral sex (Bamberger et al., 2019).

Analysis, Conclusion, and Learning

Symptoms like pain in the lower abdomen, rectal pain, nausea, sore throat, and bleeding between her periods ruled out the possibility of other STIs. Therefore, I concluded that the patient had Chlamydia. Nonetheless, I learned that while patients with STIs present similar symptoms, the health provider should also conduct a physical examination to establish the condition presented.

Action Plan

Chlamydia is considered one of the most uncomplicated conditions to treat as it is bacterial. Therefore, I offered the patient a single dose of Doxycycline that she took twice a day for seven days. The infection should improve upon the completion of the dose (Dukers-Muijrers et al., 2019).
