Positive learning experience

I’ve had a lot of terrible learning experiences, but I’ve also had a lot of fantastic ones that I’ve really appreciated and gotten a lot out of. Learning English as a foreign language in one of my town’s clubs in Russia was undoubtedly one of the most rewarding learning experiences I’ve ever had. But what was it that made it so upbeat? First and foremost, there is the issue of motivation. I was 15 years old and had a strong desire to study English.

I wanted to be able to use it in my teaching job as well as with my friends, American missionaries, on a daily basis. Being able to communicate in another language opened up a whole new universe of culture, people, literature, films, music, and mentality for me. This club was where I learned English for two years. I was cautious at first since my school English classes were ineffective and did not assist me in learning English, giving me the sense that my inability to learn English was entirely my fault.

But after a few weeks at this club, I felt relieved, proud, and satisfied with myself since I was making steady progress and seeing results. Second, the lessons were quite applicable. To help us learn more affectively, we adopted the communicative technique. Speaking, writing, listening, and thinking were all activities in which we were actively engaged. The tasks were demanding but not impossible to do. The prospective applications of the English language after the lessons in chatting with my friends aided my study.

Finally, because the language we learned was current and up-to-date, the learning was both relevant and hard. We were encouraged to study English by reading books, watching movies, and even conversing in English with one another in everyday situations, as the majority of students did not have native speaker buddies as I did. Another advantage for me was that it was not a school setting. The mood was laid-back, and I didn’t feel obligated to stick to any timetable. The fact that our work was not graded was a huge relief for me.

I could concentrate on actual study rather than worrying about marks. Finally, the group of people with whom I learned English was made up entirely of people who were highly motivated and excited about learning the English language. My desire and learning improved as a result of the opportunity to learn from each other in the classroom. My enjoyment of our lessons was aided by active participation and cooperation in our group. I was a student at the time. Now that I’m a teacher, I can’t say those were flawlessly prepared lessons.

If I had been a teacher at that club now, I would have done a lot of things differently. But it was unquestionably different from everything else I’d experienced as a student up to that point in my life.

Negative learning experience

As with most students, whether adults or children, I have had a number of terrible learning experiences throughout my life, ranging from inadequate instructional approaches to powerful teachers. These learning experiences left me with impressions and preconceptions that enriched my classroom experience.

It is critical to investigate not just positive but also negative learning experiences in order to comprehend the impact of previous learning on future learning. The majority of my unpleasant learning experiences occurred during my first two years of university, when I studied English for the goals of teaching and translation. Why do I think that learning experience was a bad one? First and foremost, the students’ needs were not adequately addressed, in my opinion.

When I was a student, I was frequently disheartened by my teacher’s insensitive behavior. Witnessing frequent problems forced me to doubt my major and even my desire to pursue a university degree at some point throughout my education. Our teacher, I believe, was completely uninformed of our hobbies, backgrounds, and even worries. This expertise would have aided her in personalizing the class and making the materials more accessible. Second, the teacher failed to provide materials and tools that were appropriate for all or the majority of learning types.

I am a student who learns visually. During the lessons, I frequently struggled to follow or recollect anything that was “heard.” I would have kept more material if I had been given some visual aids while studying. This visual aid would have enhanced my capacity to remember and store information more thoroughly and effectively. Finally, during the lessons, the communicative method was used extremely infrequently, if at all. Real-life events that elicit communication are used in communicative language instruction.

Unfortunately, our teacher rarely creates circumstances that we would encounter in real life. Real-life simulations and important themes did not entice me to learn. We were studying the language both linguistically and socially out of context. However, some situational context was still present. When we could have expressed our experiences and points of view in class, we rarely did so. The teacher spoke more than he listened. I was losing confidence in utilizing the target language in general as a result of my reduced duty to contribute. I felt less in charge of my own education.

As a result, my grades and self-esteem suffered. My shattered self-esteem accelerated my negative learning cycle. I was absent from a number of classes. I grew withdrawn and lacked the drive for any classwork. This was perhaps the most difficult learning experience I’d ever had. It improved during the course of the next three years of university. Perhaps because the teacher changed or because I was able to overcome the obstacles to my learning that had been erected during my first two years of university.
