Complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) refer to the diagnostic and treatment practices outside standard and mainstream health care (Thirthalli et al., 2016). While alternative therapies are considered substitutes for standard health, they are safe, affordable, and effective treatments for mental health issues.

Alternatives medicines are considered natural remedies better than chemical ones, while complimentary approaches are added to standard health care (Schulz & Hede (2018). According to Almeida (2018), approximately 38% of adults and 12% of children use CAM as of 2007. Nonetheless, mental health and diagnosed medical health have recorded higher CAM expenditure rates than the general population.

For this discussion, I will be doing a case study on a 40-year-old patient with severe depression. He has tried psychotherapy, augmentation, and antidepressants without any benefits. While he has also been prescribed complementary treatment such as hormones and micro nutrition, his depression has not improved.

I recommend using ginkgo biloba as alternative medicine following this analysis, contrary to the popularized Western treatment. Ginkgo Biloba is a tree extract from South-Eastern Asia, which is made from its leaves.
