In a written paper of 1,250-1,500 words, evaluate the current forces driving change in your field or industry. As a leader, or considering the role of a leader, assess your organization and evaluate how well it is responding to the forces, and identify where there is a need for change. Develop a vision to inspire this change. Include the following:

  1. Describe your organization, include the organization’s mission, and identify the various stakeholders.
  2. Identify the external and internal forces that drive organizational change in your field or industry. Explain the origin or reason for these internal or external driving forces. Explain how these forces directly affect the viability of your organization.
  3. Choose one of the driving forces. Describe the specific issues this driving force creates, or will potentially create, for your organization or department.
  4. Propose the steps needed for your organization or department to respond to this driving force.
  5. Predict how employees at various levels in the organization will respond to your proposed change initiative.
  6. Develop a vision for change. Describe how this vision correlates with the organization’s mission, and how you will present this vision to internal stakeholders.
  7. Predict how you think your vision will assist internal stakeholders in supporting the change initiative. Identify potential considerations posed by stakeholders, and discuss how you will respond.

I work for the Los Angeles County correctional facility. The organization’s primary objective is to offer healthcare services to incarcerated people who end up at the Los Angeles county jail. The government runs the organization under the Department of Health Services (DHS). The quest to improve service delivery to inmates has seen our organization adopt the best possible practices when handling our patients. We perceive inmates to be vulnerable and disadvantaged populations.

The Los Angeles County Correctional facility is, therefore, determined to build a conducive environment where staff and patients easily interact to enhance service delivery. For instance, we do not discriminate against our patients based on the social wrongs they have done. The above actions are in line with our mission “We are remaking the nation’s largest county-run correctional health system with a focus on social justice medicine, compassionate whole-person care, community partnerships, and professional growth.

Every day, we put our vision and our values into practice as we strive to improve healthcare for a uniquely underserved population.” The organization has several stakeholders. The incarcerated individuals at the Los Angeles County jail are the organization’s key stakeholders. Organizational employees are also crucial for the organization as they offer their services for their operations. The management, on its part, ensures the effective running of the facility. The local and state governments are also stakeholders as they formulate and policies that are supposed to run correctional health care institutions.

The activities of the Los Angeles health care correctional facility are influenced by a set of internal and external factors. Internal factors are forces that emerge within the organization. The management can control the forces which arise within it. A critical internal factor that affects the organization is the lack of adequate resources. Inadequacy in resources can be attributed to the negative attitude that people have on incarcerated individuals. The perception has led to a lack of adequate financial allocation.

Likewise, the population of people locked up in jails is high and continues to grow. The high number of people locked up in detention facilities has put much pressure on existing correctional health care resources, thus likely to undermine the quality of services rendered to the patients (Macmadu & Rich, 2015).

External factors, on the other hand, are those over which the organization has no control over. The forces affect the entire industry and not a particular institution. One such external factor is the recent move by the American government to expand the criminal justice system. The policy means that different activities which were once considered minor events are now punishable by sentencing.

Implementation of the policy will lead to many people being sent to prison, increasing the incarcerated individuals’ population. Many people in jails will put much pressure on correctional health facilities, with my organization being one institution. Likewise, legal forces in the nation’s or international laws influence my organization’s activities.

An example is the 1976 Supreme Court ruling in Estelle v. Gamble (Hurst et al. 2019), which outlawed discriminative health care service against convicts, thus pushing many correctional health care facilities to expand the services they offered to patients. Furthermore, national and international regulatory health care regulatory agencies influence my organization’s activities.

For instance, the National Commission on Correctional Health care stipulates different correctional facilities’ standards be accredited. The same applies to the World Health Organization, responsible for the formulation of health guidelines that member countries should follow. Formulation of new health disciplinary measures by the relevant bodies affect my organization since we also have to change our service delivery modes to meet the new standards.

The government’s recent push to expand the judiciary is a critical factor that has affected the Los Angeles Country correctional facility. For instance, it was difficult to prosecute individual cases involving drugs as they were perceived as minor offenses. The quest to put stringent measures to discourage such acts led to the expansion of the justice system and subsequently increased the facility’s population.

One repercussion of the action is that it has led to mass sentencing of people jailed for a short time. While the years of conviction may not be considered significant, the large populations with limited resources are a critical concern within the correctional health care organization.

As pointed out earlier, my organization does not have adequate resources to offer patients quality services. Due to short-staffing, the staff finds it challenging to effectively attend to the high number of patients and continually improve care outcomes. The expansion of the justice system only means that employees will have to contend with even more challenging working schedules. Likewise, the high number of patients adversely affects the quality of service at my organization as the already limited resources will have to be shared among other people.

Implementation of the expanded judicial system means we have to react to it as an organization. The first reaction is to accept that the organization’s critical operational aspect will change quickly. Next, the organization should establish the necessary course of action to meet the changes. In this case, a proposal for organizational expansion is inevitable. For instance, the expansion should occur in different ways, getting more equipment, hiring more staff, increasing health care units, or even acquiring more building space.

A team should be assigned to investigate what areas to expand and the number of patients to be served by the expanded organization. The team will collect information from different stakeholders. The collected data will then be analyzed to identify the particular aspects of the organization’s expansion drive. A proposal will then be drafted and sent to the relevant governing bodies such as the Federal and local governments requesting expansion.

I perceive that the employees are receiving my proposed change positively. For instance, managers will find it quite ideal in solving the numerous issues they have been forced to handle due to a lack of adequate resources. The managers have faced the difficult job of addressing employee complaints regarding the challenging working nature in the facilities due to limited resources. The organizational change vision offers quality health care treatment without discrimination by always adapting to industry shifts.

The vision brings together different correctional health care stakeholders with the sole objective of appreciating that individuals locked up in detention facilities are also human beings who deserve equal treatment as any other person. A critical factor in the vision is the need for change and shifts in the sector’s practices.

Our quest to offer quality health care cannot be accomplished if the organization sticks to the same old ways. The fact that new events are taking place, for instance, adopting the expanded judiciary, means that the organization also has to react to the changes to keep up with quality standards. Conducting meetings with the stakeholders in the right avenue to inform them of the change of vision.

Every stakeholder must understand the significance of being dynamic to the changing sector and its relation to quality treatment. By adopting change by expansion in this particular case, quality qualifies as an act of compassion and humane treatment that the organization seeks to offer its patients. The results will be seen by expanding the organization as a reaction to the increase in the number of patients. Only then will the patients receive humane treatment due to the availability of resources and personnel to take care of their health needs.

Acting as a united voice has a higher chance of convincing external stakeholders that the initiative is essential for the patient and employees’ wellbeing.

However, there are several obstacles that I look forward to the encounter. The first challenge will arise from convincing the management to accept the proposal and forward it to their superiors. Therefore, I will engage in more convincing and inform them that the measures are meant for the organization’s good. Thus, they will use my message to ensure appeal to other stakeholders and convince them about the initiative’s actual benefits.

Another challenge I expect is the financial implications of the proposal. Stakeholders such as financiers, the local and federal government might be reluctant to finance the initiative due to its high cost. However, we will inform them of the long-term benefits the project will bring to the organization in offering quality and humane treatment to patients, thus saving on the costs resulting from poor service delivery.
