Self-Assessment
Self-awareness is essential for developing leadership skills. Recognizing your own strengths, weaknesses, and values, and understanding emotional intelligence and learning styles can help you to be a more effective nurse leader.
For this assignment, you have the opportunity to take a variety of self-assessments to learn more about yourself and identify your assets and weaknesses as a leader. This will assist you in discovering how you can improve your own self-leadership skills. You will be asked to think critically about your results and submit a reflection as directed below.
Refer to the topic Resources. Select and complete three self-assessments. Be sure to document the results of each assessment to assist you in completing the reflection portion of the assignment below.
Self-Assessment Reflection
Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.
In a 1,000-1,250 word reflective essay, address the following:
- Provide a rationale and brief summary for selecting each self-assessment. Summarize the results you obtained on each assessment.
- Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care and explain what appeals to you about that style.

Self-awareness is considered an essential aspect of leadership as it allows one to be aware of one’s individuality and personality. In leadership, self-awareness is a practice in which one aligns personal values, strengths, weaknesses, and capabilities with roles and responsibilities in the workplace and society (Stanley, 2017). Self-awareness also helps leaders develop their emotional intelligence by identifying and managing their emotions and those around them. In this regard, self-awareness helps to create more compassionate and effective leaders in a healthcare organization.
This essay will assess my emotional intelligence, personality, and cultural competence to determine the leadership style that aligns with my strengths and values. Besides, I will reflect on the avenues for self-improvement, explore the characteristics of an effective nursing leader and assess the use of different leadership theories and leadership styles in practice.
Summary of Self-Assessment Selection and Results
I conducted self-assessments using Emotional Intelligence Test, the Big Five Personality Test, and the Cultural Competence Self-test. To better understand my capacities as a leader, it is essential to gain insight into my ability to recognize and manage my emotions and those I interact with at work and in society. The emotional intelligence test offers valuable knowledge on my current capacities and highlights the avenues through which I communicate better, address conflicts, improve interactions, show empathy, and effectively improve patient experiences in the clinical environment.
On the other hand, the Big Five Personality test helped me understand my personality, especially my strengths and areas for improvement. The tests showed that one of my strengths that has a significant impact on my leadership role is good communication. One of the elements of autocratic leadership that I could apply in providing effective patient healthcare is establishing control and using this control to achieve the desired outcomes. In this regard, making decisions and enforcing the most effective policies boosts efficiency due to the quick decision-making on the important tasks while smoothing the overall operations in the healthcare organizations as there is less conflict in the decision-making process.

In this regard, denying other nurses a chance to voice their opinions may lead to loss of morale, decreased productivity, and overall resistance, which affects organizational performance.
Nonetheless, having full control of the decision-making process leaves little room for cooperation and initiative. I tend to collaborate with other team members and accept valid but conflicting opinions from other employees, limiting innovativeness among other nurses. Most nurses I work with are knowledgeable in their area of operation, and making most decisions by myself can limit them from fully contributing their best skills to improve organizational performance.
Lastly, I have identified the need to become more autonomous and open-minded towards the patient choice of treatment or the nurses’ way of healthcare delivery. In this regard, I need to understand that opinions tend to vary with individuals and are highly influenced by experiences and beliefs.
Trying to influence others with my opinions tends to cause conflict, especially with patients. Instead, I need to incorporate patients’ cultural beliefs in providing treatment and making decisions (Aarons et al., 2017). This measure will ensure patient satisfaction and easier collaboration with other health providers, enhancing the delivery of quality patient care.
Characteristics of Effective Professional Nurse Leader
Several characteristics identify professional nurse leaders.
