Territorial expansion in Louisiana was a contentious issue among American Indians and white settlers. American Indians, mainly the Choctaws and Chickasaws, approached the issue of American territorial expansion as an effort against their freedom, a quest to take their land, and freedom.
Having lived in the land for generations, the American territory’s expansion was a direct threat to their freedom and peace and had to be deterred by all means. In the speech to the Choctaws and Chickasaws, Tecumseh’s leader calls for action to defend their land. He upholds the belief that the tribes are brave people who should defend the land to the country’s last warrior, liberty, and dignity.

On the other hand, white settlers in the Louisiana territory chose a formal way of protesting against the expansion through an appeal against injustice and their rights. Through the “Remonstrance of the People of Louisiana,” white settlers comprehensively pointed out that the expansion would be an infringement of their rights.
They underlined that they would have no representation as they had no vote and yet had to follow American laws such as not being allowed to bring in slaves.
