DISCUSSION 1:

A theme can be defined as “a broad or underlying message of a literary work.” With this in mind, discuss shared themes in O’Connor’s work by responding to each of the following prompts in detail:

How does O’Connor portray family in these stories?

At the end of “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” the Misfit says, “She would have been a good woman…if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life.” Could this description apply to any other of O’Connor’s characters? Do you think it could apply to people in general?

Explain how the title of “Revelation” could actually apply to ALL of the O’Connor stories you’ve read.

Remember: All textual references (quotes, paraphrases) should be cited in MLA format (in-text citations and Works Cited).

DISCUSSION 2:

After reading the “Perspectives on O’Connor” (pages 396-400) and “A Thematic Case Study: the Literature of the South” (pages 453-68), answer the following questions in a unified response. Then, continue the discussion with classmates.

– What did you learn from reading the material above? What information or insight was most memorable?

– Consider the Perspectives on O’Connor. What might be the value in reading what an author thinks concerning his or her work or craft? What is the value in reading about others’ views of an author and their work?

-Think about Response Paper 2, which involves analyzing a theme in one of O’Connor’s stories. If you were to quote or paraphrase any of this material within that paper, what would it be and why?

Remember: All textual references (quotes, paraphrases) should be cited in MLA format (in-text citations and Works Cited).
